If you have life-long or chronic vision problems, you should trust your eyes with an ophthalmologist. Differing from an optometrist, an ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in both vision and eye care, including surgery. Beyond medical school, ophthalmology requires at least a three-year residency followed by an optional year of a fellowship. Ophthalmologists have the training — and qualifications — to diagnose and treat more eye problems.

Note: Telemedicine is always an option. Many eye conditions, such as red eyes, swollen eyelids, can be handled over a video chat from the comfort of your own home or office.
